Libby Group to Build Veterans Memorial
The memorial will have five granite sides, one for each branch of the military
The Libby City Council has approved the construction of an $110,000 veterans memorial at Riverfront Park. The statue is being funded and built by the Lincoln County Veterans Memorial Foundation.
According to vice president Terry Andreessen, the effort to honor Libby’s veterans took off about six months ago. He expects the first phase of construction to begin this month and the statue to be completed in 2014.
“The theme is about leaving no one behind and to never quit fighting,” he said.
The memorial will have five granite sides, one for each branch of the military and on top there will be a life-size bronze statue of two soldiers: one from World War II and one from the modern era. Around the base of the memorial will be commemorative bricks that supporters can purchase for $100 each. The bricks will have the names of veterans. The site will also have granite benches with the names of project donors.
City Councilor Peggy Williams, who is on the parks committee, said there was unanimous support for the memorial.
“We’re very happy to have it being built,” she said. “It’s going to add a lot to that park.”
