Man Dead, Woman in Custody in Whitefish Shooting
Police chief says Saturday night's shooting is being investigated as a homicide
A Whitefish man is dead and his girlfriend is in custody after a weekend shooting.

Assistant Police Chief Mike Ferda says Saturday night's shooting is being investigated as a homicide, but an initial investigation also raised some element of self-defense.

The victim was identified as 42-year-old Ordean L. EngeBretson. Katherine Lanegan of Whitefish was jailed in Whitefish until the Flathead County attorney's office can review the investigation.

Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial says neighbors reported hearing screams and then a gunshot at about 9:35 p.m. They said the 37-year-old Lanegan knocked on their door and told them she had shot her boyfriend. The neighbors called 911.

Dial said EngeBretson was shot numerous times and died at his residence.
