Martin City Closure to be Reconsidered

By Beacon Staff

The U.S. Postal Service, at the urging of Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., will reconsider closing the Martin City post office, according to a Friday press release sent from the senator’s office.

The USPS announced Wednesday that it would be closing the Martin City branch because the contractor who runs it stepped down and the agency couldn’t find a qualified replacement.

John DiPeri, the Big Sky district manager for USPS, agreed to meet with Tester’s staff in Martin City next Tuesday to discuss putting the contract up for bid again, according to the press release.

“I’m glad to see that the postal service is making an effort to continue serving small-town Montanans the way it should,” Tester said in a prepared statement. “Post offices are important for community identity in places like Martin City.”

Tester previously fought to keep a post office open in Kinsey after it threatened to shutdown after a dispute over rented office space. USPS and the owner of the pose office building reached an agreement that kept it open.
