Agricultural groups are flying to Washington D.C. in a longshot bid
BILLINGS – Montana agricultural groups say they need the U.S. House to advance a farm bill in order to avoid financial jeopardy.
The Billings Gazette reports that Montana agricultural groups are flying to Washington D.C. in a longshot bid to convince House Republican leaders to act by month's end. The current roster of farm programs is scheduled to expire Sept. 30.
The Senate passed its farm bill in June on a bipartisan vote.
U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg has written a letter to his fellow Republicans asking for the vote.
Alan Merrill is president of the Montana Farmers Union. He says it may become difficult for some farmers to get an operating loan without the assurances offered in a farm bill.
