By Beacon Staff

A Canadian boy kidnapped in Fernie, British Columbia on Thursday was found safe by the Flathead County Sherriff and Whitefish Police Department early Friday morning.

Three-year-old Alvin Barnett was kidnapped by his biological father, Robert Barnett, on Thursday during a supervised visit. At 3:15 p.m., the father and son crossed into the United States near Eureka. Soon after, Canadian authorities alerted police in the United States of the situation and an Amber Alert was issued late Thursday night.

Robert was arrested in Whitefish at approximately 6:45 a.m. Friday outside a private residence.

On Thursday night, Robert approached a man near the Pin and Cue Bowling Alley in Whitefish and asked for money. The man agreed to buy Robert breakfast the next morning and let him sleep in his car outside the man’s house. On Friday morning, the man realized that Robert was wanted by authorities and called police. The Flathead County Sheriff and Whitefish Police Department arrested Robert without incident and Alvin was found unharmed. The boy is now in protective custody in Kalispell.
