Montana Electors Cast Votes for McCain

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – Montana’s three electors to the Electoral College predictably cast their ballots for Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Across the country, electors gathered and formally elected Barack Obama the nation’s 44th president, according to a tally by The Associated Press

But Montana is one of the states that McCain carried, beating Obama by a margin of 49.5 percent to 47.2 percent.

That meant that electors picked by the Republican Party in Montana cast the state’s three votes.

Secretary of State Brad Johnson, meeting with Gov. Brian Schweitzer earlier in the day about the process, says that small states like Montana benefit from the system. He says it gives them a larger proportional say in the election process than direct election by popular vote would.
