Montana Gun Group, Splitting From the NRA, Endorses Brown

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – An outspoken Montana gun group is endorsing Republican gubernatorial candidate Roy Brown, splitting from the National Rifle Association, which endorsed Gov. Brian Schweitzer.

The Montana Shooting Sports Association says the governor does not have the lengthy voting record on guns that Brown does as a state legislator.

And the association says it did not receive a completed questionnaire on gun issues from the governor. Schweitzer’s campaign says it was mailed last week, and produced a receipt to show the postal service tried to deliver it Friday.

Shooting association president Gary Marbut says the completed questionnaire won’t change his opinion anyway. He says the NRA got the endorsement wrong by backing Schweitzer — and says NRA endorsements now have very little value.
