Montana Stops UC Davis Late to Secure 17-10 Win

DAVIS, Calif. – Chase Reynolds rushed for 90 yards and one touchdown and Trumaine Johnson intercepted a pass in the end zone in the game’s final minute as Montana escaped with a 17-10 victory over UC Davis on Saturday night.

Justin Roper threw for 143 yards and a touchdown and Marc Mariani caught five passes for 66 yards for the Grizzlies (2-0), who rallied from a 10-0 deficit.

Chris Carter caught a school-record 18 passes for 190 yards and Greg Denham completed 43-of-67 passes for 362 yards and one touchdown for the Aggies (0-2). Denham tied the school record for completions and set a school record for attempts.

The game was delayed momentarily with 57 seconds remaining due to a power outage. After it resumed, Johnson came up with his second interception of the night on a fourth-down play from Montana’s 12-yard line.

The Grizzlies took a 14-10 lead with 10:49 remaining in the fourth quarter after a 61-yard catch by Dan Beaudin which set up Reynolds’ 3-yard TD run. That score was followed by a Brody McKnight 23-yard field goal to give Montana 17 unanswered points.

The Aggies led 3-0 at halftime. Denham then found tight end Brad Bispo in the end zone for an 1-yard TD at the 9:34 mark in the third quarter to give UC Davis a double-digit lead.

Montana responded with a 66-yard drive that produced a 17-yard touchdown catch by receiver Sam Gratton.
