Morley Wins Second Straight Gatorade Cross Country Award

By Beacon Staff

After another hallmark season that ended with a Class B state championship, Bigfork sophomore Makena Morley has won her second consecutive Gatorade Montana Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award.

Morley remains undefeated in Montana races and captured her second individual state title in a row this fall with a time of 18:13.1. She won her six regular season races by an average time of 1:05.1, according to Gatorade. She finished third at the Foot Locker Cross Country West Regional Championships in San Diego in December and 24th in the National Finals race.

Morley maintains a 4.0 GPA and ranks first in her graduating class. She volunteers as part of multiple community-service initiatives on behalf of a leadership course and donates her time to her team’s annual summer fun run and as a youth athletic instructor.

The Gatorade award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the race course.

Morley is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year award to be announced later this month.
