HELENA – The state health department says there have been no cases of salmonella related to tomatoes reported in Montana.
Howard Reid, manager of the Food, Drug and Cosmetics program within the Department of Public Health and Human Services, says there are always a few cases of salmonella in the state, but none have been linked to tomatoes.
At least 167 people in 17 states have fallen ill since April and the Food and Drug Administration is urging consumers to avoid raw Roma, plum or red round tomatoes.
The FDA Web site had lists of states and countries where tomatoes have been determined safe based on harvest times and distribution patterns.
However, the FDA has not determined the source of the outbreak.
