The men from Nomad defended their crown, a former Flathead High standout returned home for glory and one of the best prep runners in the state proved her skills go beyond just running at the 11th annual Glacier Challenge.
Hundreds of competitors turned out to Riverside Park in Whitefish on Saturday for the six-leg multisport relay race that raises money for Flathead Youth Home. The fastest overall time on the day once again came courtesy of the men’s team from Nomad Global Communication Solutions. Nomad clocked 3 hours, 39 minutes and nine seconds for six legs and 46.12 miles.
Caleb Ambrose, a Kalispell native who now lives in Wenatchee, Wash., won the solo division in impressive fashion, finishing all six legs in 3:58:52. Kalispell’s Steve Muller was second at 4:17:23 and Columbia Falls’ Dan Block was third, 4:29:01.
Bigfork’s Makena Morley was the top solo female finisher. The 16-year-old all-state high school runner, who will be a junior next year, completed all six legs in 4:35:44.

At the end of the event, organizers announced a sizeable change for next year’s Challenge. The Lodge at Whitefish Lake is teaming up with the Glacier Challenge and will host the 2014 race, which will be held the last weekend in September.
