Oldest Horse on Flathead’s Wild Horse Island Dies

By Beacon Staff

The oldest horse on Wild Horse Island State Park in Flathead Lake has died after spending more than 30 years on the island.

Longtime Wild Horse Island resident Barry Gordon says the old gelding “kind of ran the show” and was protective of a filly born to a mare that was moved to the island in June 2010. He told the Missoulian he last saw the horse around the first of December and believes it died at least a month ago.

Now, the 2,164-acre island is home to five mares and a gelding along with bighorn sheep and mule deer.

Jerry Sawyer manages the seven state parks located on Flathead Lake for the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. He says the old horse “had a pretty good run.”
