Outtakes: The Giants at Ross Creek Cedars
It really is hard to describe Ross Creek Cedars. You just have to experience them.

Having lived in and explored Northwest Montana much of my life, I'm amazed I have never heard of Ross Creek Cedars until recently. Tucked away in a tiny forest south of Troy, some of the largest and oldest cedar trees in the state live on astonishingly.
Truthfully, I pitched the idea for a feature to my editor as a selfish adventure more than anything. But as I learned from two great resources — archaeologist Rachel Reckin and recreation specialist Mark Mason of the Three Rivers Ranger District — there's a great story behind these ancient behemoths.
I highly recommend this trip for anyone and everyone. The drive from Kalispell takes about two and a half hours through beautiful country. The one-mile hike through the cedars is easily navigable. There are campgrounds nearby and Bull Lake is just down the road.
It really is hard to describe Ross Creek Cedars. You have to experience this place yourself. Here's a couple videos I took with my iPhone. The videos are poor quality, but they might lend some perspective.

I went to Ross Creek Cedar Forest when I was here vacationing about 4 years ago (and now I live here). It is absolutely beautiful, and the size of the trees is amazing. I recommend it to everyone who comes to visit. You won’t be disappointed.
