Photos: Whitefish Welcomes Home Olympian Maggie Voisin
Whitefish holds parade for Olympian
Two days after the closing ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Maggie Voisin returned home to Whitefish and received a hero’s welcome. Riding through downtown atop a fire truck, the 15-year-old wunderkind of slopestyle skiing waved to flocks of cheering residents who lined the sidewalks.

“It’s really cool: She’s our Olympian,” said April Harrington of Kalispell, who drove her 9-year-old daughter Dresden to the event, where the young girl cheered on her idol and waited anxiously for an autograph and a chance to meet Voisin.

After a brief parade through her hometown, Voisin stood surrounded by nearly 200 people in Depot Park receiving praise for her inspiring rise from the ski slopes of Big Mountain to the Winter X Games, where she earned a silver medal, and then the Olympic Games, where she was the youngest member of Team USA in more than 40 years. Her dream of competing for a medal fell short after she broke a bone in her leg during practice before Olympic competition, but the celebration in Whitefish reinforced the fact that it didn’t matter: Montana is proud of its Olympian.

“Your success will be forever woven into the fabric of your family, your friends and the community of Whitefish,” said Mayor John Muhlfeld.
