PLACES: Herron Park Area

By Beacon Staff

Already a hot spot for summer outdoor enthusiasts, Herron Park and the surrounding area should not be overlooked for winter activities as well.

A large inviting equestrian field greets visitors near the parking lot off Foys Lake Road southwest of Kalispell. Strapping on snowshoes, cross country skis or simply venturing out across the frozen tundra is enough to shake off stress or clear one’s mind. The park is the gateway to the Foys to Blacktail trail system and features scenic views of Big Mountain and Flathead and Smith lakes.

For speed demons and adventure seekers, check out the sledding hill on the northwest side of the park.

On colder days, while the ice lasts, blaze your own trail across the snow-covered surface just north of the park. It is also a popular spot to drill a hole, drop a line and test your luck ice fishing. With the temperatures above normal this year, take extreme caution while traversing the ice.

To the east of Foys Lake is Lone Pine State Park, one of the most spectacular and accessible views of the Flathead Valley. This time of year, snowshoeing is a popular outing for any age wanting to explore close to home.

How to get there: From downtown Kalispell, travel west on U.S. Highway 2 (West Idaho Street). Turn south on South Meridian Road. At the intersection with Seventh Street West, veer west and continue on Foys Lake Road. The entrance to Lone Pine State Park is on the east side of the road. Lake access is on the west side of the road. Continue on Foys Lake Road to the entrance of Herron Park.
