PLACES: Hot Springs

By Beacon Staff

Located about 90 minutes southwest of Kalispell, the tiny community of Hot Springs is a pretty great day trip for anyone feeling truly chilled to the bone by winter. Its natural mineral hot springs, prized by American Indians for hundreds of years, are considered among the most healing and therapeutic in the world.

But soaking isn’t the only reason to make the drive. You’ll also find a number of interesting shops and restaurants. On our short visit, we checked out Montana Movie Posters, which has an extraordinary number of original vintage movie posters, particularly those filmed in Montana (308 Main St., 406-741-5170).

The Symes Hotel has multiple soaking options, from outdoor pools to indoor tubs. Make a reservation for the private steam room, with a two-person Jacuzzi and sauna ($20/hour, 406-741-2361). Cabins, live music and a bar are also available. Just down the road, Alameda’s Hot Springs Retreat is another great lodging option (406-741-2283).

Hot Springs also offers antiques, yoga, massage and a number of clothing stores. Even if you just go for the day, upon arriving home you’ll feel like you’ve been somewhere truly distant and different.

How to get there: Head west on MT-28 from Elmo, on the west shore of Flathead Lake. After 28 miles, turn right on Hwy 77. You’re there.
