Places: Whitefish Lake State Park

By Beacon Staff

It may not fulfill the backcountry itch, but Whitefish Lake State Park is an awesome place to camp.

If you’re from out of town, the park is a superb place to stay for the week or weekend. The proximity to downtown amenities is enticing, but the park itself is anything but urban.

The small park is set in a mature forest and borders the northern edge of Whitefish Lake. A boat ramp is available for easy access to the pristine lake waters. Picnic tables speckle the rocky beach with grated fire rings. The beach eases into the water for an inviting dip in the roped off swimming area under the vista of Big Mountain.

For locals looking to get away for a brief moment, the campground provides a quiet place without the hassle of long-distance travel.

“It is beautiful here,” said Sheryl Pinnock, who was on vacation with her husband Clarke Pinnock from Alberta. “And we love the access to the water,” added Clarke.

On the weekends, the campground’s 25 sites fill up quickly so get there early. Other amenities include firewood, potable water, showers, restrooms and a public phone.

How to get there: From downtown Whitefish, continue north on U.S. Highway 93. Veer right onto Lion Mountain Loop Road. Take the first right onto State Park Road. Follow the signs to the park.
