PLACES: Whitefish Mountain Resort

By Beacon Staff

Whitefish Mountain Resort is well-known for its great ski terrain, but just because there’s no snow left on the mountain doesn’t mean you can’t still shred at the Fish. Every summer the resort opens its previously snow-covered grounds to mountain bikers who are looking for everything from easy to extreme trails that are accompanied with a beautiful view of the Flathead Valley.

Whitefish Mountain Resort offers a ride up the mountain on a chairlift for a small fee. Thrifty bikers can avoid this fee and pedal up the mountain and access all of its trails free of charge.

The trails at Whitefish Mountain Resort were designed for all levels of bikers. If you want to compete against other bikers, then Thursday Night Race League should be right up your alley. The series of seven events runs through Aug. 25 and pits riders in the Flathead against one another. The races are between three to five miles long and are open to all skill levels.

How to get there: If you’re in Whitefish, head north on Baker Avenue toward East First Street. Continue onto Wisconsin Avenue, which will veer to the left and become East Lakeshore Avenue. Turn right onto Big Mountain Road and follow it for about four miles.
