PLACES: Woodland Ice Center

By Beacon Staff

The Woodland Ice Center is open for skating at Kalispell’s Woodland Park. This year, the Flathead Valley Hockey Association has taken over management of the volunteer-run ice rink.

Above 22 miles of plastic pipes chill the surface and make this a 185-by-85 foot frozen playground. In its third year, the rink is an ideal place for ice skaters of any ability to practice and perform.

Although dodging a pine needle or two is common during some parts of the year, the hockey association maintains an impeccably groomed surface to glide on in the chilled open winter air.

The Woodland facility is equipped with stadium lights, a comfortable locker room and team benches. Rental skates are available, but even with that extra expense an afternoon of cruising the frozen surface is reasonably priced.

Pick up an Ice Center schedule to see times of mom and tot skate, open skate, hockey practices – including a high school drop-in game time and adult women’s hockey – among other events. For special occasions – or that textbook romantic surprise – the rink also provides times available for rental.

For more information on how to volunteer your time or information on skate times and fees, call the rink at 758-7813.

How to get there: From downtown Kalispell, go east on Second Street East. Continue on Second Street East through the intersection with Woodland Avenue. The entrance is on the left just past the cannon.
