WEST GLACIER – Glacier National Park officials say they are trying to locate and remove from the park’s population a 17-year-old female grizzly bear and her two yearlings because they have become too habituated to humans.
Glacier Superintendent Chas Cartwright says the bears “pose an unacceptable threat to human health and safety.” Rangers are trying to find the bears in the Cut Bank Valley area of the park.
The female has frequented the Morning Star and Old Man Lake campgrounds in the area for the last five years. She and her cubs have approached hikers, entered cooking areas and sniffed at tents during the night.
Park officials say they will try to relocate the yearlings to the Bronx Zoo in New York, but the other bear will have to be killed because no zoos will accept adult grizzlies.
