Public Hearing for Thompson Precision Tax Incentive

By Beacon Staff

The Flathead County Commission has scheduled a Dec. 11 public hearing regarding requested tax-reducing benefits for Thompson Precision, Inc.

The benefits would be for capital equipment used to manufacture spectrometric equipment at a yet-to-be-constructed building on Whitefish Stage Road. If the application is granted, the new manufacturing equipment will be taxed at 50 percent of its taxable value in each of the first five years after approval.

Each year after the first five, the tax percentage will increase by equal percentages until attaining the full taxable value in the 10th year.

The public hearing will take place Dec. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at the commissioners’ chambers in the old courthouse building.

According to the “new or expanding industry classification” application filed with Montana Department of Revenue, Thompson Precision, Inc. intends on constructing a new manufacturing plant to build spectrometric equipment.

The total worth of the capital equipment is $1,114,493, according to the application.

David Jolly, the construction manager for the project, said Thompson Precision owner Ray Thompson is still deciding on which of the three building models he intends on constructing.

Thompson is the founder of Semitool, which, after its 2009 sale, is now known as Applied Materials. Thompson also owns Sykes in Kalispell, and is responsible for its remodel.
