In a spectacular game between the second and third seeds in the Northwest A boys divisional semifinals, Ronan pulled out a 57-53 overtime win over the Columbia Falls Wildcats on Friday night.

The No. 3 Chiefs forced overtime when senior star Moss Tanner drove the length of the floor with less than ten seconds left in regulation, scurried past three defenders on the baseline and dropped in a tough left-handed lay-up as time expired.

Columbia Falls, the No. 2 seed, lost its opening game of the divisional tournament for the second straight year. The Wildcats were led by senior Chase Grilley, who almost single-handily kept his team in the game in the second half. Columbia Falls trailed for nearly the entire game but came back to tie the game at 48 late in the fourth. Grilley scored the first five points of the final period for the Wildcats.

With 14.6 seconds left and the game tied at 48, Wildcat senior Chase Fairbank missed a free throw, but Grilley grabbed the rebound and scored to put Columbia Falls up 50-48. Then Tanner got his turn to play hero and didn’t disappoint, getting the inbounds pass and taking the ball the length of floor.

Tanner finished with 19 points, including 15 in the second half. Grilley led the Wildcats with 20.

Ronan plays No. 4 Whitefish in the Northwest A divisional championship game on Saturday at 8 p.m.
