Schweitzer Says Stimulus Put 1,000 to Work So Far

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – Gov. Brian Schweitzer says stimulus projects are so far employing about 1,000 people in Montana.

The biggest piece of federal stimulus money — about $200 million — is going to road, highway and bridge projects in the state.

Schweitzer said Wednesday that work is in full swing on about 10 percent of the projects. Other work will begin as soon as design and engineering are completed.

In total, the state received about $900 million in federal stimulus money. Most of it was earmarked by Congress, but state lawmakers set their own priorities with smaller amounts — ranging from local infrastructure projects to backfilling education and state government budgets.

Schweitzer says he doesn’t know how many jobs will ultimately be created.
