Schweitzer Seeks Help for Workers Facing Layoffs

By Beacon Staff

HELENA – Gov. Brian Schweitzer says the owner and operator of a coal mine near Roundup will host one or more job fairs for Stillwater Mine workers facing job loss.

Stillwater, a producer of platinum and palladium, recently gave 60-day layoff notices to 526 employees at the company’s East Boulder mine.

Schweitzer says he requested help from Signal Peak Energy, which owns and operates the coal mine near Roundup. The governor says Signal Peak expects to add 100 jobs for underground miners next year.
