Feature Photo: Assault Rifle Assembly Line

By Beacon Staff

U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, right, assembles an assault rifle with some guidance from Josh Sonju, left, of Sonju Industrial (SI) Defense in Kalispell. Baucus spent most the day manufacturing and assembling guns during one of his “Montana Work Days,” where the senator works alongside employees in various jobs. Baucus championed the passage of the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, which he said would allow businesses like SI Defense to write off a portion of the cost of new equipment. Founder of the family owned Flathead Valley business SI Defense, Dick Sonju, recently participated in Baucus’ jobs summit in Butte. Baucus was also in town to attend a groundbreaking ceremony at the future site of the Kalispell public safety training facility shooting range.
