Skiers Converge on Whitefish Mountain Resort for Upcoming Races

By Beacon Staff

The Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation is hosting two weekends of youth ski racing at Whitefish Mountain Resort this month.

The first event, sponsored by the Base Lodge Clinic of North Valley Hospital, is scheduled for Jan. 10-12 and will be for male and female competitors ranging in age from 6 to 13. The races are part of the United States Ski Association (USSA) Northern Division Youth Ski League (YSL) Series.

The second event, sponsored by Sportsman Ski Haus, is scheduled for Jan. 17-19 and will be for male and female competitors ranging in age from 14 to 21.

These races are part of the nationwide USSA Series and will be qualifying races for the USSA Western Regional Junior Championships to be held at Jackson Hole, Wyo., in March.

Both events are sanctioned events within the Northern Division of the United States Ski Association. The Northern Division includes all of Montana and parts of Wyoming and South Dakota. Competitors for these events will be coming from ski clubs from throughout Montana including Anaconda, Big Sky, Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Great Falls, Helena and Missoula as well as the Flathead Valley. There will be several Canadian competitors travelling to these events as well.

The United States Ski Association is the governing body for all amateur ski racing in the U.S., as well as the U.S. Ski Team that will be competing at the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia in February.

All races will be run on Ed’s Run – the main run on Chair Two – and can be easily viewed from the base area near Ed and Mully’s Restaurant.

Volunteers are needed for a number of on-hill as well as administrative duties during the upcoming races. All volunteers will receive a lift ticket if needed for race course access on race days as well as a complementary lift pass that can be used anytime later this season.
