Small, But Wielding Word Power

By Beacon Staff

Whitefish High School Speech and Debate kicked off its season last weekend at the Bigfork High School Speech and Debate Invitational. They walked into the meet with only 11 competitors and walked out in fourth place with 30 points. Of the Whitefish team members, six were novice competitors. The remainder of the team is seasoned and ready to dominate at Polson next weekend.

Senior Evan Harris joked his way to third place in Humorous Oral Interpretation; senior Julia Williamson took fifth place in Extemporaneous speaking; sophomore Tyler Schiff took third place in Memorized Public Address, and freshman Jake Morison placed ninth in Original Oratory.

Whitefish novice policy debaters freshman Adam Harris and sophomore Joe Mazar won third place at their first meet.

Coach Pat McLaughlin said, “I am proud of the team. It is small, but an energetic team with potential and more competitors on the way!”
