State Seeking Info on Shot Grizzly Bear

By Beacon Staff

MISSOULA — State wildlife officials are looking for information on the shooting death of a grizzly bear with three cubs northeast of Ovando.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks game wardens responded to a report of a dead female grizzly on Nov. 3.

The bear had three cubs, two of which wardens were able to trap. The cubs will be placed in the Bronx Zoo.

Several attempts to trap the third cub were unsuccessful. FWP bear management specialist Jamie Jonkel says there is a chance the lone cub could survive the winter on its own, but the agency may make more attempts to trap it if additional sightings are reported.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 1-800-TIP-MONT (1-800-847-6668).
