THE WINE SPY: Jean Manciat Mâcon Charnay Chardonnay 2008

As a Chardonnay lover, my expert contact in the wine business suggested I try a French version. The French typically do not use oak barrels, therefore their Chardonnay’s typically have little or no oak taste. I was a touch skeptical, but upon comparing a moderately oaked version from Napa against a French version with a hint of oak, the smooth, clean finish has me sold on a great new region from which to enjoy wine.

Having been to Europe a number of times, I remember discovering a number of wonderful wines that thankfully are available in the states, but I had never tried the Mâcon Charnay Chardonnay. The one thing that stood out is the light taste.

Layman’s Review: The light clean taste was a treat to my palette. The Mâcon Charnay Chardonnay did not overpower the meal and finished so smooth that everyone at the table requested more.

Expert’s Review: Medium straw to pale gold in color with intense, stony yellow apple and citrus aromas. Chalky green apple and Asian pear flavors on the palate are underscored with wild-yeast complexity. The minerality and fruit strike an ideal balance and the finish is long and clean as a whistle with perfect cut. This is very pure, real Chardonnay. Organic and Biodynamic.
