COMING HOME

BLACKFEET COUNCIL

Chief Earl Old Person, 84, has been on the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council off and on since 1954, serving as chairman for much of that time. He was ousted in 2008, but reelected in 2012 to a governing body that has since been mired in controversy.

GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

Glacier National Park ranger Kathy Dodd secures a sign to a barricade indicating a park closure. On Oct. 1, Glacier and all 401 National Park Service sites were closed because of the government shutdown. According to the National Parks Conservation Alliance, 750,000 visitors were turned away from national parks everyday during the 16-day shutdown.

HOMELESS

Richard Scherrer, a widower and single father of two adult children, has been living out of his van for the past six years. This winter, Scherrer sought refuge from the cold at the Samaritan House, where residents’ circumstances rarely fit the social paradigm of homelessness.

JORDAN GRAHAM TRIAL

Jordan Graham is flanked by her defense team and the media as she leaves U.S. Federal Court in Missoula on the second day of her murder trial. Graham shocked the court when she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. She could face life in prison for murdering her husband of eight days, Cody Johnson, by pushing him off a cliff in Glacier National Park on July 7.
