Turkey Hunter Near Kalispell Charged by Grizzly

By Beacon Staff

A turkey hunter reported being charged by a grizzly bear near the Creston National Fish Hatchery east of Kalispell over the weekend.

The hunter told Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials he spotted a deer carcass Saturday morning, heard something and looked up to see the grizzly charging him at close range. The hunter fired his shotgun at the grizzly from about 10 yards away, but was uncertain if he hit the bear.

The adult grizzly and two cubs ran away.

Wildlife officials responding to the hunter’s report found no blood in the area, but they did locate grizzly bear tracks in the snow.

FWP observed the area from a helicopter, but did not spot the bears. Cameras were installed near the deer carcass to monitor the area.
