Voisin Opts Out of Olympic Qualifying Event

By Beacon Staff

Maggie Voisin opted out of competition at this week’s U.S. Freeskiing Grand Prix slopestyle event in Breckenridge, Colo.

The 15-year-old Whitefish freeskier decided not to race in the third of five Olympic qualifying events for slopestyle skiing, reportedly because she wasn’t feeling 100 percent and had lingering soreness.

Voisin is the top ranked American woman in slopestyle skiing vying for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi. She leads by only four points ahead of Missoula’s Darian Stevens and Devin Logan. Voisin, Stevens, Logan and Grete Eliassen have all secured a single podium result.

Stevens had a rough day in Wednesday’s qualifying round, placing 21st among the nation’s leading freeskiing athletes. Logan finished first in her qualifying heat at Breckenridge and will compete in Friday’s finals.

Voisin has two remaining Olympic qualifying events to secure a spot in Sochi. The next Grand Prix is in Park City, Utah, Jan. 15, and the final freeskiing event is set for Jan. 18, again in Park City.

X Games gold medalist Nick Goepper is the only American athlete who has mathematically secured his spot on the newly formed U.S. Freeskiing Olympic Team, as he is the only athlete to have earned two podiums and two top results for the USA.
