Wake Zone Changes for Swan and Echo

By Beacon Staff

Fish Wildlife and Parks is considering cutting back the “no-wake” restrictions on Echo Lake, and extending the zone on Swan Lake.

The possible changes at Echo Lake would eliminate the no-wake speed about 0.25 miles southeast of the entrance to Blackies Bay, and the corridor entrance to both Blackies and Causeway bays. FWP received four petitions pushing for the change.

On Swan Lake, the no-wake zone would extend from the northern outlet of the lake to approximately 0.75 miles south, to the southern tip of the southern-most island. The proposal is in response to a petition from the Swan Lakers, Swan Sites Homeowners Association and Montana Trout Unlimited. Their petition requested an extension of the no-wake zone from its 200 feet from shore to one mile from the shoreline at the north end of the lake.

FWP is holding public hearings at their Region 1 Headquarters at 490 North Meridian Road in Kalispell. The Echo Lake hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, and the Swan Lake hearing for Thursday, March 6. Both are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

Comments about the proposed changes can also be submitted in writing to Martha Abbrescia, FWP, 490 North Meridian Road, Kalispell, MT 59901, or by email to [email protected]. Comments must be received by March 14.
