Whitefish Caps Perfect Soccer Season with Fifth State Championship

By Beacon Staff

Even snow could not slow the Whitefish Bulldogs.

The local powerhouse beat Billings Central 4-1 at Smith Fields last weekend, capping an undefeated 15-0 season and successfully defending its Class A state championship. The team will be riding through town on a fire engine Wednesday, Oct. 31 after school, according to Whitefish High. The engine will be on the east side of the school at 3:30 p.m.

Three standout seniors — Sam Donaldson, Sean Janni and Curran Edland — and talented junior Nathan Boone all scored goals in the title game. Donaldson also had two assists and Boone had one. Senior goalkeeper Thomas Clark remained as dominant as ever, stopping seven shots and allowing only his fifth goal all season.

The victory gave Whitefish its fifth title, tying the program for the most all-time for all classes in Montana. Flathead is the only other boys team to win five championships. Whitefish has now won titles in 2002, ’06, ’07, ’11 and ’12.

These Bulldogs were about as flawless as possible. They outscored opponents 92-5 in 15 games. They have won 27 games in a row dating back to last season.

The Columbia Falls girls finished the season second after losing to Billings Central at home in the Class A state championship. Undefeated Billings Central won 6-0, claiming its fifth straight title.
