Whitefish Holding Moments of Silence for 1984 Bus Tragedy

By Beacon Staff

Thirty years ago, a bus carrying the Whitefish High School wrestling team crashed along U.S. Highway 2 on the southern edge of Glacier National Park. Nine died and 18 others were hospitalized in the deadliest highway accident in Montana history. The bus collided with an empty fuel truck and burst into flames while returning from a competition in Browning.

In observance of the Jan. 21, 1984 tragedy, Whitefish High School is holding a moment of silence at the wrestling dual on Thursday and the boys basketball game on Friday. The dual meet is against Columbia Falls and begins at 7 p.m. The basketball game against Polson is also at 7 p.m.
