Police in Whitefish continue to investigate a weekend shooting death while the woman who reportedly told neighbors she shot her boyfriend has been released from custody.

Police Chief Bill Dial says that it appears likely that Katherine Lanegan of Whitefish acted in self-defense. She was ordered not to leave the area until the investigation is complete.

The victim of Saturday night's shooting was 42-year-old Ordean L. EngeBretson.

Dial said neighbors reported hearing screams and then a gunshot at about 9:35 p.m. Saturday. They said the 37-year-old Lanegan knocked on their door and told them she shot her boyfriend. The neighbors called 911.

Dial said EngeBretson was shot numerous times and died at his residence.

@NPDXReporter I think I'll start strategically calling it "pre-lunch" too, and then "forget" to eat my real lunch later. #dessertforlunch
