Whitefish Ski Racers Improve at Regional Competitions

The Whitefish Mountain Resort Race Team is in the midst of a strong competitive season spanning the region.

Nevada Kramer finished 17th at the Northwest Cup Alpine Race Series competition at Schweitzer Mountain in Idaho last weekend. The four-day event was sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and featured racers from across the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Kramer competed in Super G and Giant Slalom races. In the Giant Slalom, he improved from 42nd to 17th on the second day to improve his international ranking.

Four other alpine skiers from Whitefish competed in a Northern Division of USSA Qualifier series in Red Lodge recently. The series is part of a qualifying ladder to USSA age group championships at the conclusion of the competitive season.

Jacob Welch, Cameron Welch, Austin Oberlitner and Britt Walton were part of a field that included racers and teams from Montana ski resorts and Montana State University and Rocky Mountain College.

In the first Giant Slalom race, Jacob Welch earned 12th, Oberlitner was 19th and Cameron Welch was 21st. In the second Giant Slalom race, Walton placed ninth, Jacob Welch was 17th, Cameron was 27th and Austin earned 37th. In the final day’s Slalom event, Walton earned another ninth-place finish, Jacob Welch moving up to 13th, Oberlitner was 22nd, and Cameron 30th.

The Whitefish race team will return to Red Lodge Jan. 19-21 to compete in a college series hosted by Rocky Mountain College.
