With the national economic downturn and strapped local budgets, bond advocates understand that this is a less than auspicious time to ask taxpayers for money to fund special projects.

“Going to the public right now for money is like going to an ex-wife and asking for a date – it’s not a good circumstance,” Mark Peck, the county’s 911 project coordinator, recently joked of the county 911-center bond.

Winter Road Services Will See Cuts

With gravel roads at the center of a decade-long controversy in Flathead County, it stands to reason officials would welcome the winter snows that quell dust troubles. But this winter could pose its own set of problems for the roads department and, for a change, Public Works Director Dave Prunty is looking forward to summer.

Playoffs start this Saturday across the state

Columbia Falls and Whitefish head to the playoffs

Columbia Falls' fortunes in the playoffs will depend a good deal on the performance of these three young men, their backfield cohort who isn't in the photo (John Woody, #24), and the line that opens holes for them. Left to right, Stephen Baumgartner (#20), Mitchell Wassam (#13) and Mackey Nolan (#4). Mark Riffey photo for the Beacon.

For those of you wondering what's up with the Class A high school football playoffs, Columbia Falls will be hosting Corvallis (6-3) this Saturday at 1pm and Whitefish will visit Dillon (6-2), also at 1pm.

Good luck Cats and Dogs.

City Livestock Ordinances

Whitefish Is Clucking Over Chickens

Whitefish may soon be joining Missoula in changing its chicken rules. Missoula, after months of heated chicken wars, approved an ordinance last December to allow up to six hens in residential zones. Now, Whitefish is clucking, too, over poultry.

"The keeping of chickens is a common inquiry," Nikki Bond, a city planner, reported at the Whitefish City Planning Board's mid-October meeting. But most potential chicken owners find a quick deterrent—an expensive permit compared to the cost of the chickens.

It was the kind of game everyone was expecting, if not looking forward to.

Tense. Close. Hard fought.

Scenic Fall Drives and Hikes

Larch Peaks in Whitefish Range

The Upper Whitefish Lake Road is flanked with golden larch at its peak right now. --Becky Lomax, for the Beacon

Take a drive or a hike this weekend through the Whitefish Range for the larch is at its peak. Unlike other needled trees, the western larch loses its needles every fall. But before it drops them to carpet snow with gold, it turns them to raging yellow, lighting up slopes like they're on fire.

Roads, such as Red Meadows and Graves Creek, are still open, providing gorgeous fall drives to enjoy the larch. Lower trails are still snow free, but a few inches of white covers paths in higher elevation.

Steady and Proven Leadership

Folks who eat the food that Pam and I grow at Purple Frog can all attest that we work hard and pour our heart and soul into our community. It’s that value of hard work and honoring locals, instilled by parents and grandparents, which I bring to Helena.

It’s a funny campaign when special interest groups (PACs) do the heavy lifting for your general election opponent. The same former director of the Montana Republican Party heads up both PACs and one hired an ex-Conrad Burns staffer to spend gobs of money to distort real issues.

The half-inch of mailings in the past weeks are simply a distraction. The intent is to take the focus from our achievements in the past two Legislative Sessions. But locals know my style of cooperation.
