Annual Quilt Show and Benefit

Quilts Celebrate Women

“My house looks like a little quilt factory,” says Sally Glutting. “People keep dropping stuff off.” For six years, Glutting has collected quilts for the Celebrate Women fundraiser for the local Violence Free Crisis Line and Abbie Shelter.

Throughout July and August, the Celebrate Women 2008 quilt show revolves its displays on the walls of Loula’s in downtown Whitefish. Rather than traditional bed quilts, the show features unique contemporary art pieces. Many are original designs, instead of patterns, sewn mostly by Kalispell and Whitefish quilters. “We want to showcase what quilters are doing,” says Glutting. “It’s great for the public to see the variety and breadth of what you can do with quilting today and an opportunity for quilters to experiment with new techniques.”

The Skeeter Scourge

Flathead Suffers From Five Years Worth of Mosquitoes at Once

A mosquito swarm has descended on the Flathead, the likes of which hasn’t been seen in years. Arriving with the warm weather, the gossamer-winged pests have burdened every barbecue with their buzzing bloodlust. The attack of the “skeeters” forces those who wish to enjoy the long summer evenings to choose between fleeing indoors or suffering the red, itching bites left in the wake of these irritating insects.

It may not be the World Series, but it’s one of the best local baseball tournaments. Over 130 baseball players descended yesterday on the Glacier Twins Stadium at Memorial Park in Whitefish for day one of the 24th Annual Sapa/Johnsrud Memorial Tournament. The five-day invitational tournament drew nine teams from Alberta, Oregon, Washington, California, Saskatchewan, and Flathead Valley.

Both the Kalispell Lakers and Glacier Twins compete in the tournament. “Sometimes baseball scouts come out to watch,” says tournament director Pat Sapa. “You’re seeing some kids who go on to play pro and have a future in baseball.”

Most nonprofit organizations rely on banquets, auctions or even car washes and bake sales to raise funds to finance their work. For the Flathead Attention Home, though, sending athletes running, biking and paddling through 55 miles of Montana scenery has proved the trick.

The Glacier Challenge is a six-leg multi-sport race that’s perennially the biggest fundraiser for the attention home, a non-profit dedicated to caring for young people who are at risk or who face family crises. This year’s race begins at 7:30 a.m. on July 12 at Whitefish’s Riverside Park.
