These are the leaders of the pack.

They are aspiring college students, all-state athletes, 4.0 students, young adults and future leaders. But most of all, they are wide-eyed and eager teenagers, fully aware of the big world they face and the special title they hold: Glacier High School’s first senior class.

Courses offer high school students a college education

FVCC Leads Way as Running Start Program Expands

When 20 Flathead High School students enrolled in a pilot program called Running Start at Flathead Valley Community College in 1996, the concept of high schoolers earning college credit was already well developed in states like Washington, Utah and Minnesota. In Montana, though, the idea of expediting higher education had yet to take hold.

Now, more than a decade later, FVCC has set the educational standard for Running Start in Montana, offering traditional and technical college credit courses to 300 students annually – for half the cost.

Mont. Students Top National Average in SAT Scores

HELENA – The state's top education official says Montana students continue to score higher than the national average on the annual SAT college entrance exam.

State Superintendent Linda McCulloch said Tuesday that Montana students scored on average a 541 in reading compared to a national average of 502.

High prices put strain on Montana schools

Watching Education’s Bottom Line

This year Montana students should expect more expensive lunches, fewer field trips and sparser classroom supplies because of a poor economy and high prices for food, fuel and energy. And unless the economy picks up soon, even bigger changes could be in store over the next couple of years.

As the 2008-2009 school year kicks off, Jerry House, Whitefish school district’s superintendent, said the outlook isn’t necessarily ominous, but it’s alarming.

Break-ins

Suspect Arrested in Border Break-Ins

A man wanted for a string of cabin break-ins in the Polebridge area has been arrested after apparently spending almost a week in the backcountry along the U.S.-Canadian border.

John Lynn is accused of breaking into several cabins and shooting at the long-closed Trail Creek border station north of Polebridge.

Missing Swimmer

Flathead River Drowning Victim Identified

The Flathead County sheriff says a Pennsylvania man drowned while attempting to swim across the Flathead River over the weekend.

Sheriff Mike Meehan says 25-year-old Adam Podufal of Girard, Pa., dove in the river around 4 p.m. Saturday in an area called "Devil's Elbow" just below the Hungry Horse Dam.

Missing Swimmer

Flathead Authorities Recover Body of Missing Swimmer

Flathead County authorities say they have recovered the body of a 25-year-old man who went missing while swimming in the south fork of the Flathead River.

Flathead County Sheriff's Cpl. GW Schneider says the body was recovered Saturday evening, a few hours after the man went missing.

Remaining board positions filled, meeting planned

Library Board Gets Back to the Books

The Flathead County Library System has a full board again, bringing a degree of closure to a summer of uncertainty.

On Aug. 14, Flathead County commissioners filled the three remaining board positions, appointing Kristi Hatfield to the Columbia Falls opening, Connie Leistiko to the Kalispell seat and Terry Peterson to the Whitefish spot. The board now has all five members in place and will resume its regular monthly meetings beginning on Aug. 28. Prior to the first meeting, there will be an orientation to transition the new members into their positions.
