Flathead Electric Co-op Plans Power from Dump

The 135-acre Flathead County landfill, near Kalispell, has been collecting methane gas produced by decaying garbage and burning it, to prevent the greenhouse gas from escaping into the atmosphere.

By next year, the gas will be used to drive a 1.6-megawatt generator hooked up to the Flathead Electric Co-op's distribution system. The generator will produce enough power for 900 homes.

Library Bogged Down by Bureaucracy

The Flathead County Library Board of Trustees met last month and once again failed to make a decision, or even indicate a possible plan, on the future of the Kalispell library. Meanwhile, the abandoned Tidyman’s grocery store near downtown here continues to rot, its 52,000 square feet eager for books – or anything else to take its mind off the weeds, occasional graffiti and that feeling of being blight-stricken.

Karina Ek, 20, was nervous the day she arrived at a Turkish bank to begin teaching English classes to the bank’s employees. Nerves turned to fear, though, when her first question received only passive stares.

“I asked, ‘How are you today?’ and everyone just looked at me with blank faces; they had no idea what I was saying,” she said. “Here I was, a young American girl who’d been in their country like a month and I had to figure out how to teach a class of 60-year-old Turkish men. I was so scared.”

Whitefish, Kalispell Fastest Growing Cities in the State

HELENA – New census statistics show that Whitefish is the fastest growing Montana city since the start of the decade, while Billings remains the largest.

The population of Whitefish increased by 60.6 percent from the 2000 census to 8,083 residents by the summer of 2007. But it is still only the 11th largest city in Montana.

Billings, with an estimated population of nearly 102,000, topped the population list. It grew by 13.4 percent over the same time frame.

The other fastest growing places by percentage are: Kalispell (42.7), Belgrade (40.5), Columbia Falls (40.3) and Bozeman (38).

Traffic Crash

Browning Man Pleads Guilty in 2006 Crash

GREAT FALLS – A Browning man has admitted he was drunk when he crashed his vehicle into an East Glacier couple's car, causing the couple to suffer 30 broken bones between them.

Robert Lee Welch pleaded guilty this week in federal court in Great Falls to assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The 26-year-old is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 2.

Libby Fatal

Authorities Identify Victim of Libby Crash

Lincoln County officials have identified the 34-year-old woman who was killed in a car crash near Libby.

The coroner's office says Luanne Graves died in a one-vehicle rollover on Secondary Highway 260 on Tuesday morning.
