This battle needs renewed and will be renewed every time it gets put on the back burner.  Once you have lost a loved one to someone driving under the influence this issue will haunt you on a daily basis (Dawn Bowker you will never be forgotten!).  These multiple-offense DUI drivers need serious help.  Instead, we choose to sit back and enable them with our petty laws that slap them on the wrist with little fines.  Three-strikes and you are out…for an indefinite amount of time until the offender gets serious help.  A marked bright yellow license plate would also be helpful for the public to see just how many of these ignorantly loaded weapons are out there on the roads.  With the yellow license plate, I would also give law enforcement the ability to pull these drivers over whenever they see fit - with no reason.  Mark these people with their hidden addictions for all to see.  Seriously - what can we do at a local level to get this problem fixed????

shillbot, I can honestly not imagine losing someone I love to the selfishness and stupidity of a drunken driver. I don’t think I could ever get over the anger.

Sen. Barkus could possibly ressurrect his reputation if he led the charge for significant change in Monatan DUI laws.  We don’t need to re-invent the wheel—-there are many models out there that would improve our shameful reputation among states.  So it’s not a matter of what to change—-its a matter of getting the lawmaker’s attention and motivating them.  Write to them and let them konw that this is a pivotal issue and one on which you will make your voting decisions in the future.  As a 22-year veteran firefighter< I’ve seen enough DUI related carnage to make most people perpetually nauseous.  And the worst of it is the DUI driver typically is un- or minimally injured, while other victims die or are permanently disabled.

what do you expect, you have people that NEED to drive to bars to get drunk, how do you expect them to get home? It’s not like you can just hail a taxi like in the major cities. People here sure like to drink, it’s just too bad that their drug of choice kills people and ruins lives, while marijuana does none of that, yet it’s still illegal. Amazing isnt it? I would almost say they are making decisions like the alcohol companies are paying big bucks, and the weed companies aren’t paying anything. So of course, ban the weed and encourage everyone to drink. What a sad thing to think about.

Another thing, in the marijuana story, they said that city council is worried what tourists will think of kalispell, if we let these dispensaries go up. They don’t seem to worried what tourists think of all the drunk driving and traffic fatalities though. Weird huh?
