This was a very, VERY tough decision for the Regents, as is evident BY the close vote. And it wasn’t SOME students, it was the elected student leaders who listen to all the students and carry their collective message forward. It is important to think about what will happen in two years, since right now MUS has recieved one-time only money that won’t be there in two years. Even with this minimal increase, and it is very minimal, cuts WILL have to be made at a time when enrollments are up. With a total freeze, it was estimated that UM would have to cut about 150 positions - more unemployed people and a more difficult job market for grads to enter. Classes would have to be cut making it harder for students to get the classes they need to graduate on schedule. This would increase the time they spend in school, costing them more money and eventually making it difficult for many to even finish. It was a choice between two bad decisions. I am very proud of the Regents, on both sides of the decision, for making this tough decision. It was not an easy one to make.
