Oh what a fierce temptation to pull the trigger. Way to go Amy! You did the right thing.

I’m surprised by the huge number of thumbs down. Tell us why.

While in this case things worked out well and everyone was ok, other than some stiches, if the criminal had been armed himself it could have been worse. A shootout is not something that
needs to be happening in anyone’s neighborhood. While the sheriff prased the couple for thier
bravery he also should have issued a warning about the high risks of tyring ao apprehend
criminals on your own.

The sheriff did right for not “issuing a warning.” We’re all well aware of the risks. The presumption should always be for the citizen to be empowered. Whether it be the Canadian stopping the drunk
driver in Whitefish, or the recent event in Texas, or countless other events daily around the country.
Good things happen when citizens act. The cops can come and clean up the mess.

At a “meet the candidates” event, an elderly gentleman from the north end of our large county asked the sheriff candidate what he should do if someone was trying to break into his home.
The point blank answer was ‘be prepared to defend yourself.’
This area is largely rural. The response time to a 911 call is way too long for any kind of problem.
Citizens need to be self reliant. But we should all recognize if someone takes a risk, they also risk
paying the consequences.
