Comments on: Coaches Are Fired Too Quickly

I’m not so sure Jerry was fired as Jerry and the school agreed to disagree on how the program should be run going forward.Anyway he is certainly well liked and we wish him the best here in Portland.

The #1 item on any schools ability to compete on the field should be the NUMBER of athletes that get a 4 year degree. The so called free ride…....is a lot extra work for playing football….and then add in classroom duties. To graduate with a 4 year degree is real hard to do in 4 years.
It took me 5 1/2 years to get my degree, working 65 hours a week on 2nd shift in a large factory, avoid nervous breakdowns due to lack of sleep, work injuries, raising a family, and bringing home $100 a week was a real challenge. In 1965 I was making a whole whopping $1.59 an hour, paying for school and family expenses…....that was tuff for sure.
But, today’s college sports are all about making for a good show and of course the money. If a player can avoid major injuries and get his/her degree…...hats off to them.
I am sure the environment of Missoula helps the student athlete more than some other towns in the Big Sky Conference and that makes getting good students & players easier on the coach.
Finally…....I think coach Hauck is a class act 100% and the players feed off him and his attitude.
