Great, let’s investigate cutting costs. Recent trends are troubling, but don’t throw the babyout with the bathwater.
Let’s also factor in the benefits that the current recycling program brings. How many tons of
trash was diverted from the landfill? Is this cost savings factored into the figures provided?
How many people are employed in the current system and how much does the program add to our
local economy, to our quality of life, to the long-term costs of running the landfill?
Given the expected increases in valley population and in the recyclable content of our trash,
what are the long-term forecasts? What do county residents think about a recycling program that
in the last 15 years has cost them an average of less than $0.30 per year per resident? Why has
the cost increased so much in the recent years and why/how was it profitable in the past?

It would be nice to include glass and PVC when rebidding the recycling program.
PVC has been recycled and used by the Europeans for over a decade. That makes more
room in the landfill because it takes hundreds of years for that stuff to decompose. I hope
those savings are included when considering what a recycling program is worth.
Target is able to accept glass for recycle. Maybe other stores would be willing to take it, too,
and we can find someone who is willing to pick it up. There’s a local business that picks it up
once a week.
It’s important to recycle. I hope the savings in landfill space is taken into consideration when
making decisions about what to recycle.
