Is this weird, or what? I’m a journalist by trade, and working on a book on navigation. Oneof my valued resources is the eighth edition of a book first published in 1957, one year after I
was born. The book is entitled “Van Sickle’s Modern Airmanship.” Yep. Same Van Sickle. Out
of sheer curiosity I wanted to learn more about him and see if he was still alive. I’m
delighted to find that he is. But I’m a bit dismayed by the article, which glosses over the
man’s highly regarded aviation manual. He’s had a remarkable life. He started out as an army
cavalry (!) officer, switched to airplanes, flew bombing missions over Japan, led a wing of the
Strategic Air Command, wrote a classic book on all aspects of aviation, and now has become a
historian of the fur trade. And he’s 97. Just…wow.
