Comments on: GOP Proposes Renewing Tax Cuts, Freezing Spending

Even Peter Orza, Obama’s former OMB director, advocates against his former boss to extend the Bush era tax cuts for another 2 years to stimulate the economy and grow jobs. His advice has been greeted by the White House with stubborn petulance.

Nice try at ginning up controversy Craig:
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2010/09/peter_orszag_clarifies_rift_wi.html
“But Orszag told me that a key point had gotten lost: He only favors temporarily extending the tax cuts for the rich reluctantly, and only if it’s the sole way of obtaining a deal that would end them altogether.
“The point I was trying to make is that we can’t afford the tax cuts over the medium term, and they shouldn’t be made permanent—but the middle class tax cuts should not expire today,” Orszag told me.
“If the price to be paid for that a temporary extension of the upper income tax cuts, my view is that we should reluctantly accept that,” Orszag continued. “I would prefer that that not be the price that is paid.”
This is, to be sure, slightly at odds with Obama’s position—but less so than yesterday’s coverage suggested. In his speech today, Obama will come out against a compromise, insisting that we let the tax cuts for the rich expire right now. Orszag, by contrast, is willing to support a compromise if it’s the only way to obtain a deal on ending the tax cuts.

Orzag: “...no one wants to make an already stagnating jobs market worse over the next year or two, which is exactly what would happen if the cuts expire as planned. “
Kal Nat, I guess you are one of those Dems that want to exacerbate the terrible jobs market and campaign on that issue for those candidates that share your view.
By Kalispell Native on 09-08-10
Craig cherry-picking out of context, no surprise coming from you.
By Craig moore on 09-08-10
Kal Nat, it’s not surprise coming from you that you overlooked Orzag’s words that caused all the fuss that the WaPo likened to leaving a hand grenade as he left. As I said, his advice has been greeted by the White House with stubborn petulance.

Never mind that of the 50 wealthiest lawmakers in Congress, 27 of them are from the donkey party:
http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/116489-wealthy-lawmakers-increased-their-riches-as-economy-sputtered-in-2009
The top one is (insert drum roll) John Kerry - who topped the list for the 2nd year in a row. He gets his wealth from his wife - an heir of the Heinz ketchup empire.
Dems are such hypocrites.
By Craig moore on 09-08-10
JB, never mind that Kerry parked his boat in RI to avoid MA taxes.
By JB on 09-08-10
You mean…his yacht?

Ya mean the taxes he is going to pay?
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/07/28/kerry_will_pay_mass_tax_on_ri_yacht/
Kerry married into wealth, just like John McCain.
Dems are hypocrites because they have 4 more than the elephant party on the top 50 list? Stellar logic.
By Craig moore on 09-08-10
Kal Nat, notice the Kerry “nuanced” answer: http://wbztv.com/local/john.kerry.yacht.2.1825558.html
===quote===
When asked “Did you berth the boat in Massachusetts?” he replied, “That depends on who owns it.”
Then, he said to his driver, “Can I get out of here please?”

By JB on 09-08-10
Yeah, right…I believe that one…I mean, we are talking about a politician here…right? Just like McCain - and he is no prize either.

There you go again Craig, cherry-picking.
From your cited article:

“There’s nothing more to say about it,” he told reporters at an event at the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station Monday.
The “Isabel” is docked in Rhode Island rather than at Kerry’s summer home on Nantucket or in Boston Harbor. That means he avoids paying nearly $500,000 in taxes to Massachusetts and he doesn’t have to pay a $70,000-a-year excise tax.
Rhode Island repealed those taxes in 1993. That has made the state something of a nautical tax haven.
‘NOT AN ISSUE’
“Let’s get this very straight, I’ve said consistently we will pay our taxes, we have always paid our taxes. It’s not an issue period,” he said.
Last week, when the Boston Herald broke the story, Kerry’s office released a statement saying, “The boat was designed by and purchased from a company in Rhode Island, and it’s based in Newport at the Newport Shipyard for long term maintenance, upkeep and charter purposes, not tax reasons.”
“It’s being worked on,” Kerry said on Monday. “It’s under warranty down there. It’s being worked on and it will come to Massachusetts and I look forward to that.”
Kerry’s aide told WBZ Monday night that the senator will pay whatever taxes he owes on the Isabelle. She says the Department of Revenue will determine how much he owes.

All just before your cherrypicking selection. He was leaving an event and was being asked about something that was already in the process of being dealt with.
By Craig moore on 09-08-10
Kal Nat, it has been in MA ports before this matter broke. http://www.tradeonlytoday.com/home/505489-john-kerry-ill-pay-mass-taxes-on-yacht#
===quote===
The state’s senior senator has been assailed by questions since the Boston Herald reported Friday that he was docking his yacht, Isabel, in Newport, R.I., allowing him to avoid hundreds of thousands of dollars in Massachusetts taxes. Rhode Island rescinded its sales and use tax on boats in 1993, creating a tax haven for yacht owners.
Residents who buy boats out of state, but plan to use them in Massachusetts, must file a form and pay a use tax, equivalent to the Massachusetts sales tax of 6.25 percent, by the 20th day of the month after they take possession of the boat, according to the Department of Revenue.
Kerry reportedly filed no such form and paid no such tax. If he docked the yacht in Massachusetts, he also would be subject to a $70,000 annual excise tax, payable to the city or town of that home port.
===end quote===
Kerry only offered to pay the MA taxes after being caught trying to skip out.
By Kalispell Native on 09-08-10
The paragraph before your ‘selection’ says:
========
“We’ve reached out to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue and made clear that, whether owed or not, we intend to pay the equivalent taxes as if the boat’s home port were currently in Massachusetts,’’ Kerry said. “That payment is being made promptly.’‘

Keep trying to make mountains out of molehills.

Obama’s speech in Ohio was nothing more than campaigning. His plans are lightweight - and let’s not forget how Obama supported TARP and the bailouts - which happened under what administration, boys and girls?
And where are we spending money? National security and defense, just like the former president. Obama refuses to cut spending overseas, so he drains the Treasury to fight multiple wars. Hmmm….remind you of any civilizations in decline?
$250k does not make you a rich person (except in Obama’s eyes - so he must be rich!!) If you’re going to tax somebody, then tax the multibillionaires - Rockerfeller, Gates, Buffet, et al…and give the rest of the taxpayers a break.
Obama was wrong before and when he was elected - and he’s still wrong…unless you think of him as “The Anointed One.”

TARP=Bush’s admin. http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2009/09/15/bush-tarp/
Multiple wars=Bush
Those over 250k are 1-2 percent of Americans.
I don’t consider him to be deified in any way. I think of him as the guy who volunteered to captain the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.
By JB on 09-08-10
Well, KN, I agree with you there - Obama is definetely going to go down with the ship. But will he save the women and children first?
By Kalispell Native on 09-08-10
Not if the G No P has anything to say about it.
By JB on 09-09-10
At this point, I would almost rather put up with incompetence than the train wreck of the current administration.
Almost.
The comic relief factor would definetely keep the alphabet media awash in news.
By great bear on 09-09-10
hello , hey JB the train was in the ditch when St. George the 43rd was asleep at the helm .don’t blame those who built the tracks, it should be the ones who took the money and ran…

I predict a MINIMUM 50 seat House gain for the GOP in November. They look to be taking the Senate,too. Most Americans do not like having their freedoms and money squandered and controlled by empty suits in DC.-or any level of gov’t for that matter. The GOP is going to win BIG at the local, State, and Federal elections this November. Thank g-d.-maybe then we can have what is rightfully ours returned to us and have the government keep itself in check.
