Oh dear. A bunch of cranky, greyheaded old duffers is upset because things are being run in a contemporary manner that they can’t understand, since they’re stuck with their 1950’s mentality.

Kalispell Native: I tend to agree with you, BUT NOT THIS TIME! You’re way off-base with your comments. (or perhaps you’re one of the current board?)
I believe the current board’s actions to dismiss Jay without ANY attempt to correct the situation was injudicious, irresponsible, and just plain poor public policy. Absent criminal or fraudulent activity, you give a manager a second chance and improve both the employee and the organization. Turnover is expensive and you lost a great knowledgebase and asset in firing this tenured employee. You have wasted the fair’s resources recklessly!
There is no training for Boards and consequently they often consist of well meaning people who are collectively ignorant and ineffective.
There is a model available that brings boards into a territory of far greater efficiency and effectiveness. Anyone interested in improving their board, please point your browsers to:

We all know Jay Scott is a nice guy, but there was no movement going forward. Results are results. Why didn’t Jay show some proactivity to find solutions to the problems. All we see is the same ol stuff going the same ol direction. Do you blame the board for that? Face it folks, this county fair of ours is worthless and embarrassing. Losing the horse races was just icing on the cake, but there were no adjustments. I believe it is a time for new leadership. If getting a new carnival circuit means getting a new board then I am for that too, but Jay Scott was comfortable doing the same thing again and again and again. Boring

Sorry to say but the NW Montana Fair needs a complete overhaul. It has become very stale & very dated. We have a goldmine that is not being taken advantage of. Right now the fair is targeting an audience that is well into their 60’s & 70’s. Time to let go & start new & bring in a motivated fair manager with a successful trac record.

After reading this comments I am not sure that the readers are understanding fully what this group is trying to accomplish and I hope to shed some light on the inside of that meeting. First off, I take offense to the “old duffers” comment. As a 21 year old citizen of this community I am concerned for the direction the fair is now heading in. This group of people that are backing Jay Scott are the same group of people in support of horse racing and rodeo! This issue is not just about the reinstatement of Mr. Scott, it is about having a fair board that wants the fairgrounds to remain an area where a sucessful country fair is ran that attracts people of all ages. The chairman of the fair board who is currently in office is the one who decided it best to get rid of horse racing, which I hope people would agree was not a wise decision. Facts and figures speak for themselves at the detrement the choice of getting rid of horse racing has caused to the NWMF. I welcome any questions about the current state of horse racing and rodeo in the Flathead Valley because I want everyone to know what is really going on. I myself want to see a fair that brings in lots of people that help boost the local economy while having attractions that we are all proud of and want to attend,. The current fair board is not the people that are serving the best interests of a fair with horse racing, rodeo, vendors and 4-H. Please support the future of the fair grounds by being well educated about what this group is ultimately trying to achieve. Onwards and upwards is what I say, and with that we need change! New fair board that has the fair as a top priority please!

The fair has a LOT to lose in very short order. I suggest that in this economy, people will return to simpler pleasures and would really support a well run fair. On the other side of that coin, people will quickly abandon this fair if they see shoddy management. The board needs to show exceptional strength and leadership and fix this mess decisively and professionally.
