Comments on: The Second Night of the Grizzlies

Let’s be civil. The Flathead Beacon encourages vigorous discussion and lively debate, but we will delete comments that attack other readers, make accusations we can’t verify, stray too far off topic, criticize local businesses (call them if you have a problem), convict someone of a crime, use profanity or are simply judged to be in bad taste. We don’t always have someone moderating comments, so we ask for your help: If you see a comment that violates these ground rules, or you simply deem it offensive, please e-mail editor [at] flatheadbeacon.com. Stories like this always intrigue me. Not the excellent and enduring “Night of the Grizzlies” or even the lessons learned, such as maybe it’s not wise to leave out garbage where bears can feast on it. I mean the human compulsion to personalize events. “I was AT the Twin Towers just seven months before 9/11!“ Or “I was supposed to be in New Orleans for a convention just weeks after hurricane Katrina!“ Or even, “I saw her just three weeks before she died. She said she needed some tuna. It’s so sad.“ I really am fascinated by this part of our make-up that makes us insinuate ourselves in events. “I worked in Glacier Park when that happened!“ Had I more time, I’d explore it. Maybe someone else will find a grant to do it. In the meantime, I’d invite the author to take a class in the proper use of the reflexive word, “myself.“ Hint: “This is welcome news for people like myself,“ is not it.

A curious mind at work?  I like that.

I myself (?!) am curious what makes people tick. I often care more WHY a person has come to the conclusions they have than the conclusions themselves.

As to your final point.

If you respond to any of my comments, please feel free to mention any constant misuse in sentence structure or grammer that I might be employing.  (Really!)  I’m always willing to take notes from an expert in their field.

(But NOT the ...‘s I refuse to give those up!)  smile

My own personal pet peeve is more than 4 - 5 sentences without a space.  Just makes it sooo much easier to read.

Vud, see? Everyone has pet peeves. Misusing myself happens to be mine (not be confused with abusing myself!). I think it’s fair to hold writers and columnists to a higher grammatical standard.

In the interest of complete disclosure, I’ll admit that knuckle-crackers also make me uncomfortable.

There, I spaced out the lines. Better? smile

Wow, I had to re-read that second sentence 3X before I got it !

The spaced-out look is much better too…and I’ll try to quit cracking my knuckles.

Vud,

Ahhh. Peace, harmony and accord on an Internet forum. Think what we’ve done could catch on?

Dusty, it has to do with the gunslingers packing a bully attitude along with their gun.  They take more chances and for the most part will shoot first.  Those unarmed likely seem much less of a threat to the bear, and the bear being the smart one will usually run.

KB:

So. You noted my participation in that past fiasco, huh?

Nope.  These things run hot and cold.  It’s just the reality of the impersonal nature of the medium.

I can only TRY to keep myself in check.  Dang!  Now I can’t use that word without some small apprehension. HA.

In fact I guess we’re kinda, sorta violating the rules of the forum now by posting ‘off topic’ ?

Ehhhh…So it goes…

Vud,

You made me laugh, in a good way. Thanks.

What a fun forum for a change!  I have a personal story related to the Night of the Grizzlies, but considering KB’s point, I’m now feeling kind of self conscious, myself, smile and so will resist a retelling here.  However Vud, I think you meant “sentence structure or grammAr.“  I’m just saying.

...Waaaait a minute…

Could a certain poster have caught this earlier?

If you take Dusty’s last remark - on this particular misspelling - not as an insult but as a reference…..Could it be?

If so..I salute you.

Good point Vud.  I didn’t catch that.  As to Dusty’s question, I don’t know if it applies to me or not, I don’t remember.  And who could blame me after this many decades?  And besides, I’m willing to cut you a break.  There’s only one or two keys between “A” and “E”.  Honest mistakes count for something.

Funny, Vud. I saw it, but I really don’t police people’s spelling or grammAr. I just think if you’re paid for writing, you should take some care. The Beacon is good; they’ve just been careless lately. And yes, I used to write for a living, so if your posts ever get syndicated, I’ll ride you like a spider monkey on a border collie!

TeeAitch, tell your story, please! Didn’t mean to inhibit you.
